Guide to Filming (2009/10 Edition)

Schools and educational institutions

Most primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong are run by the Government or Government-subsidised organisations. There is a standard application form for filming in Government and subsidised schools. Permission is also required from the school before filming. For non-Government schools, contact the school management.

Hong Kong has 12 degree-awarding education institutions. Filming can take place with prior written permission from the individual institution. Technical education is provided by the Vocational Training Council's nine institutes of vocational education, and over 20 training centres and skill training centres. Contact the Executive Officer of the individual institute or training centre for information on filming on their premises.

Sports centres and sports grounds

Most sports centres and sports grounds are operated by the LCSD. Contact the Venue Manager or the respective District Leisure Services Office.

Streets and roads

Though most streets in urban areas are crowded, some have distinguishing features that may appeal to filmmakers. For example, Hollywood Road in Central is famous for its antique and curio shops. Lan Kwai Fong, also in Central, is a popular bar and restaurant area with cobbled streets closed to traffic.

Ladies' Street in Mong Kok and Temple Street in Jordan are very interesting. In Temple Street, Chinese opera and fortune-tellers can be found alongside the usual stalls selling clothes, toys and watches.

See 'General Guidelines' in this section for information about filming in the street.

Temples

Buddhism and Taoism are the main religions in Hong Kong. Deities from both religions are often honoured together in the same temple. There are more than 600 temples of varying sizes in Hong Kong administered by either the Chinese Temples Committee (CTC) or private organisations. Filming cannot take place in the CTC-administered temples that are classified by the Antiquities and Monuments Office as Grade I historical buildings. Apply in writing at least seven working days prior to filming to the Assistant Manager (Temples) of the Chinese Temples Committee Secretariat (See Contact List). For privately owned temples, contact the owners/operators to arrange filming.
