Established in 1989. The academy aims to promote film art and culture through academic research and professional training. It provides 1-year professional diploma programme in Hong Kong. Since 2005, the academy has affiliated with Bigfoot Entertainment of Hollywood, and established new campuses in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Xiamen to offer accredited degree programmes. In addition, the academy provides joint diploma programmes with a number of distinguished universities in the USA and Europe. Graduates exceed 4,500, most of them work in the local film/ TV/ advertising industries or abroad. Other services provided by the academy include production of a 10-hour TV programme for China Satellite Television (CSTV) each week, and talents management agency for overseas film companies.

Most members of the academy are panel members of distinguished international film festivals. Prof Schumann F TANG, the CEO of the academy, was the former chairman of Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia Film Awards and a founder-director of Hong Kong Film Critics Association, and is now a Subject Specialist for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.
